It is written in the book of Chendo:
After the creation of the cruel yet irresistible game of Nethack, several players rebelled against the isolation and separation put in place by the authority of the Creators. Patches were formed, virtual spaces shared, changes undertaken. One stole from another the most powerful and useful of collaborative enhancements until a great community had been birthed -- no longer to seek the Amulet of Yendor alone, no longer to toil blindly in the dark cavities of Gehennom, the Under World. This destiny we all now share.
Your god seeks to possess the Amulet, and use it to decree your ascendancy over other gods' heralds. Likewise, you wish your accomplishments to be known!
We, newly trained adventurers, have been heralded by birth as the instruments of your publicity. We are destined to record your effort to recover the Amulet or die (many, many times) in the attempt. Your hour of destiny has come, your accomplishments will be displayed, the world is watching. For the sake of us all:
Go bravely with Chendo!
